We could be headed back to Washington D.C. in Fallout 76 expeditions

For fans of Fallout, the MMORPG (or at least pseudo-MMORPG) that is Fallout 76 has always been the red-headed stepchild of the franchise. It is easy to see why, with its many departures making it significantly different from what fans have come to know and love. However, that is not to say that Fallout 76 is a bad game, especially in its current state. Bethesda has gone through a lot to improve the game, and I think it’s an enjoyable experience if you come in with different expectations. One of those changes is the Fallout 76 expeditions feature, which could be bringing us back to Washington D.C. if dataminers are to be believed.

Images shared on the Fallout 76 subreddit by one cyberRakan give us a glimpse of some rough work-in-progress environments. While that is not a surprise with content always being made, it is the setting that catches the eye.

The environments remind us of where Fallout 3 first kicked things off for the franchise in modern times. The urban setup strongly resembles Washington D.C., and more specifically, Dupont Circle.

This might be pure speculation, but the signs are there. Although most of the assets are placeholder ones, there is still enough evidence to corroborate this conclusion. Bringing players back to a familiar place might just be the masterstroke Fallout 76 has been waiting for with expeditions.

Mysterious source

The source of these screenshots, however, could give us cause for worry. They were apparently taken on a hacked server, which may have allowed an elaborate scheme to be born. These servers have been put together by the Fallout 76 community, and are highly unstable. However, they do allow access to parts of the game that are not yet live on official servers.

At the end of the day, these could be old environments that we are looking at, or just assets lying around for testing. Regardless, fans looking for more information about Fallout 76 and its expeditions feature may be hoping for it to be true.

As a big fan of Fallout 3, I am crossing my fingers as well. The wait continues.
